Before you even walk into a flooring store, there are some basics you should know about carpet flooring.

Which fiber is right for you?
Flooring choices will always come down to lifestyle and budget but know there are four basic carpet fibers.
There are others, including silk, blends and a fairly new one, Triexta, ultra-strong with stain resistance built into the fiber.
Ask the retailer to explain further.
- Nylon, which is well known for extreme strength. You will need to keep applying a stain protectant, however.
- Less durable polyester; it doesn't have the "bounce back" characteristic of nylon. It does have superior stain resistance.
- Wool. This is an all-natural, beautiful, fluffy and elegant. It's also white, but don't let that scare you away. There are natural oils that act as both a dirt repellant and a durability factor. It does come from sheep after all and they live outside and in barns.
- Olefin. This is an economical synthetic. It does have good stain and fade resistance, but it’s not as durable as the others. The strength improves when it’s in a Berber construction.

What is carpet pile?
It is the fabric loops: either with long, loose fibers like the high-pile shag or shorter, more tightly woven low piles like cut and loops.
Keep in mind each room and installation have different priorities and challenges.
This can make one carpet pile better than another for a particular installation. For instance, you might notice that most offices go with a low pile; that’s because they're easier to clean and somewhat more long-lasting.
A high pile rug is great for bedrooms, but not-so-much for stairs where the priority is safety. The fibers don’t provide a proper foundation, so down you'll go.
